New Brookland Tavern has been a crucial hub for the metal and hardcore scenes in Columbia, South Carolina, for decades. Known for its intimate, DIY atmosphere, the venue has provided a vital platform for both local and national metal and hardcore bands, offering a space where underground music can thrive. It's been a cornerstone for fans and musicians alike, fostering a sense of community and belonging in the heavy music scene.
The venue has weathered many challenges over the years, including changes in ownership and financial struggles. Despite these hurdles, New Brookland Tavern has remained committed to supporting the metal and hardcore communities, even during tough times when other venues in the area shut down. The new ownership has continued this legacy, working to preserve the venue's role as a safe haven for heavy music. Its perseverance through these difficulties speaks to its importance within the scene, making it more than just a place for shows—it’s a symbol of resilience and passion for metal and hardcore music in the region. In its most recent struggles, New Brookland Tavern (NBT), a long-standing pillar of Columbia’s music scene, is at risk of permanent closure due to significant financial challenges. After the previous owner stepped down this summer, the new owner, Carlin, who has been with NBT since 2017, took over with hopes of keeping the venue alive. However, unexpected tax debts from the previous ownership—totaling $35,000 with a $15,000 down payment requirement—have blocked the transfer of necessary licenses, leaving NBT unable to reopen.
On top of tax issues, rising insurance costs for liquor liability policies, renovation needs for ADA accessibility, and kitchen repairs have further strained NBT’s finances. The venue is seeking to raise $75,000 to cover the tax debt, insurance down payments, and renovations to get back on its feet.
In return for donations, NBT is offering incentives like free concert tickets for varying periods, depending on donation amounts, as part of a tiered rewards system.
With the venue facing indefinite closure if the tax debt isn't paid soon, NBT is calling on the community for support to ensure its doors stay open and it can continue serving Columbia’s music scene.
